Liptov is one of the traditional Slovak regions . Its territory is roughly identical to the territory of the former Liptov County. It corresponds to the districts of Ružomberok and Liptovský Mikuláš, with a small part of the district of Poprad.
There were several villages in the region in which lace-makers knitted lace and made it for women from other villages. Where traditional folk clothing was preserved, it included a lace cap with characteristic knitted patterns. Densely knitted, tightly knitted lace with variously named patterns was typical of the whole region. The lace-makers knitted the lace on a ball-shaped backing and used wooden decorated sticks.
Folk knitted lace has long been part of the traditional clothing of women in Liptov.
It was worn on hats, which as a head covering were a sign of married women.
One of its typical elements is its many pairs. The pattern often contains several leading pairs. Not infrequently, a pair is the leading pair for part of the pattern, and becomes the warp pair in another part of the pattern. In units of larger widths formed by multiple patterns, alternation of pairs between patterns can be observed.
